People talk about 'balanced diets' - does that include syrup?

The key to feeling good is to take regular exercise and eat a healthy, balanced diet.   A balanced diet means eating in moderation from a variety of foods, so that we get all the nutrients our bodies need to function efficiently.

Aren't sweet things bad for teeth?

Most food carbohydrates, of which syrup is one, offer a base for tooth decay bacteria to grow and produce potentially harmful acid.   The best way to look after your teeth is to brush your teeth carefully in the morning and at bedtime with a fluoride toothpaste. This will radically cut tooth decay in most people.  There are other things you can do to help - like flossing your teeth, using a protective mouthwash and visiting your dentist regularly for a check-up.

Does Lyle's Golden Syrup contain sugar?

Yes, it is produced from sugar cane.

Are Lyle's products fat free and cholesterol free?

All our products are fat and cholesterol free except Lyle's Squeezy Syrup Chocolate flavour, which contains 6.6% fat.

Are Lyle's products GM free?

All our products are GM-free.

Are there E numbers in your syrups?

We strive to produce syrups containing natural ingredients. In some instances, we have added products that carry an E number to enhance performance. E330 (citric acid) is added to some of our Lyle's Squeezy Syrups (Strawberry, Blackcurrant and Raspberry flavours) to achieve the correct consistency and to improve flavour. Citric acid is a naturally occurring organic acid found in many fruits especially citrus.  It is involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.

Do any Lyle's products contain monosodium glutamate?

None of our products contain monosodium glutamate (often referred to as msg).

Are there nuts in any Lyle's products?

None of our products contain nuts except for Lyle's Hazelnut Coffee Syrup.

Do any Lyle's products contain gluten?

All our products are gluten free.

Do any Lyle's products contain milk?

Lyle's Squeezy Syrup Chocolate flavour contains skimmed milk powder.  None of our other products contain milk or milk derivatives.

Does Lyle's Golden Syrup contain fish oil or gelatin?

None of our Lyle's products contain fish oil or gelatin.

Should pregnant women avoid any Lyle's products?

All our products are fine for pregnant women.

I have Galactosemia - should I avoid any of your products?

Since pectin is a polymer containing galacturonic acid, which may digest to galactose, you may wish to avoid Lyle's Golden Spread.

Are the Lyle's products suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

All of our products are suitable for vegetarians.  All our products are suitable for vegans except Lyle's Squeezy Syrup Chocolate flavour, which contains skimmed milk powder.

Are Lyle's products Kosher?

We currently hold Kosher Certification for: Lyle's Golden Syrup, Lyle's Golden Syrup Maple Flavour, Lyle's Black Treacle, Lyle's Squeezy Syrup and Lyle's Golden Spread.  The London Beth Din audits our premises and production procedures annually and issues certification on the basis of this audit.

Lyle's Golden Syrup has a best before end date - does it go off?

Pressure can build up in the tin in the space between Lyle's Golden Syrup / Lyle's Black Treacle and the lid over time, therefore it is not advisable to use products if they are past their best before date.

What should I do if my golden syrup has crystals in it?

The syrup is still fine to use - to remove the crystals stand the open tin in a pan of hot water and keep stirring until crystals dissolve.  NB it is not advisable to use products if they are past their best before date.

How do you measure Lyle's Golden Syrup without making a mess?

The easiest way is to use a tablespoon. 1 tablespoon = 1 oz or 25g.  Alternatively put the tin on weighing scales without its lid, note the total weight and spoon out Lyle's Golden Syrup until you have reduced the total weight by the designated amount.

Can you use Lyle's Golden Syrup instead of sugar for cake baking or in cups of tea?

Yes, however there will be a different flavour, consistency and texture to the end results due to the moisture of the syrup and distinct flavour and aroma.

Is golden syrup the same as treacle?

No, they're very different in taste, texture and appearance, but in some parts of the UK, especially in the north of England, some people call golden syrup 'treacle'. Treacle tarts are, in fact, made with golden syrup.
